SUMMARY:Gila Earth Day Community Litter Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Event Location:\nGila Community Foundation\nSilver City 88061 \nPick It Up – Toss No Más Earth Day Community Cleanup on\nSaturday\, April 19th at 9 am – 12 pm at Gila Community Foundation parking lot \nThis Gila Earth Day\, we welcome you to make a positive change for our community and our planet! Humans are making a greater impact on Earth than ever before. On Earth Day\, and every day\, we ask you to take action to help protect our planet. Join us for a community cleanup on Saturday\, April 19th to remove litter and debris from our neighborhoods\, parks\, roadways\, and streams. We’ll provide the cleanup supplies if you supply the POWER. Let’s work together to clean our shared home in the universe: Earth! \nEarth Day is an annual celebration of our planet. This global event aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourages global citizens to take action to protect our planet. This year\, the Gila Resources Information Project (GRIP) is celebrating Gila Earth Day by focusing on deeper impacts and collective action. We are joining our parent organization in this effort by organizing a community cleanup focused on stewarding the lands and waters of Silver City. Visit gilaresources.info or watch Facebook@GilaEarthDay for more Earth Day events and activities. \nVolunteers should meet at the Gila Community Foundation parking lot at 1106 North Pope Street\, at 9 am on Saturday\, April 19th and grab your supplies\, including trash bags\, gloves\, trash pickers\, and snacks. Once you’ve finished collecting litter\, return to the parking lot and drop off all trash and recyclables between 11am and noon. We’ll have coffee\, donuts\, and music for volunteers! \nVolunteers should bring a water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes\, a sun hat\, and sunscreen. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Families with younger children are encouraged to clean up litter in their neighborhood\, local parks or waterways as children under 12 are not permitted on state highways for the cleanup. \nThank you to the New Mexico Department of Transportation for hauling the collected trash to the landfill. Recyclables will be recycled with Silver City Recycles. \nCheck out the Pick It Up-Toss No Mas website www.silvercitytossnomas.org to sign up to volunteer and to learn about litter prevention opportunities\, the business pledge program\, Adopt-A-Roadway or Waterway program\, and solid waste disposal and recycling resources. \nVolunteers are the foundation of the Pick It Up – Toss No Mas program. Since October 2021\, over 940 volunteers have picked up over 28\,382 pounds of trash\, debris\, and recyclables from Highways 180 and 90\, Silver City neighborhoods\, Big Ditch Park and San Vicente Creek. We are incredibly thankful for the amazing turnout and support in our collective effort to keep Silver City clean and beautiful. \nMonthly Pick It Up – Toss No Mas clean-up events are held the third Saturday of every month. Community members can also adopt a roadway or waterway to take care of and clean up throughout the year. On top of that\, Pick It Up – Toss No Mas can provide guidance for those who would like to put on their own clean up event\, helping to supply the trash pickers\, trash bags and gloves for your event. \nPick It Up – Toss No Mas community cleanup events are sponsored by the Town of Silver City\, New Mexico Clean and Beautiful\, Silver City Watershed Keepers\, Silver City Recycles\, Silver City MainStreet\, SWNMACT\, Southwest Solid Waste Authority\, Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce\, and New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Toss No Mas Program. \nMore information for the event can be found at silvercitytossnomas.org or contact Alesia Hallmark at 575-538-8078 or via email at pickituptossnomas@gmail.com
